Metro-North’s Scarsdale Station becomes the second station to be made fully accessible this year. Also, the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) fiscal year (FY) 2025 budget receives approval; Metrolinx’s GO Expansion—On-Corridor Works project is ranked second on ReNew Canada’s Top100Projects report; and construction on a new Brattleboro Amtrak station is set to begin in March.

The Rail Connect Partners joint venture has entered into an alliance development agreement with Toronto’s Metrolinx for the East Harbour Transit Hub. Also, New York regional transportation agencies launch their sixth-annual tech competition; and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) celebrates a transit-oriented development project at the North Bethesda Metro Station in Maryland.

Amtrak earns the top score on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2023-2024 Corporate Equality Index (CEI). Also, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) deploys railcars into the Atlantic Ocean; the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (Maryland DOT MTA) completes the feasibility study for the North-South Transit Corridor; and Metrolinx selects AECOM as its delivery partner for the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension project.

Metrolinx teams up with Canadian whisky brand Forty Creek to provide free rides on GO Transit and UP Express on New Year’s Eve. Meanwhile, NJ Transit’s systemwide beverage ban remains in effect, and the Federal Transit Authority (FTA) takes nationwide steps to address assaults on transit workers. Also, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) kicks off a community engagement process to activate new spaces under new Red Line Tracks; the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) introduces the first LRV4s with a new seating arrangement; Scarborough’s Rapid Transit (RT) trains could have a new home in Detroit; and NJ Transit sells a stuffed animal to support Ricardo the Bull.

RAC Honors Safety, Environmental Leaders (Updated 12/5)

The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) on Nov. 29 announced the recipients of its 2023 Safety and Environmental Awards that recognize “excellence and innovation.”

Ontario, Toronto Forge ‘New Deal’

Under a “new deal” reached Nov. 27, the government of Ontario will provide the city of Toronto with up to C$1.2 billion in provincial operating support over three years and capital relief, which includes funding for the Eglinton Crosstown and the Finch West Light Rail Transit (LRT) projects; 70 new Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway trains; and subway and transit safety, recovery and sustainability.

Metrolinx makes its PRESTO card available in Google Wallet. Also, the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (NYMTA) announces that the New York City subway has hit one billion rides this year; and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) will introduce a new name and look to its rail system in 2024.
